Surface water has to go somewhere. Put a soakaway into slow-draining ground and the water backs up toward the building it was meant to keep dry.
Falls set by eye
Foul runs work on gradient. Laid too flat, a run holds solids. Laid too steep, the water runs ahead and leaves them behind.

Movement, damp and standing water show once the structure is loaded and the seasons turn, by which point the ground sits under everything.
Foundation type follows the structural design and what the ground does under load. Clay, chalk and sand behave differently, and nearby trees, slopes and old drainage runs change the answer again. We build to the design and the building control requirement rather than a standard detail.
